Map of the evolution of asymmetric fission (IMAGE)
Caption
The upper right the the well-known asymmetric fission in the Actinides is visible, i.e. the heavy elements with atomic numbers Z = 89 - 103, that are stabilised by the heavy fragment (xenon isotopes, Z=54). The lower left corner shows the newly discovered asymmetric fission of lighter isotopes in the region around mercury (Z=80) that is stabilised by the light fragment (krypton isotopes, Z=36). The black squares indicate the valley of stable nuclei.
