A novel 3He FED device was developed at the SLEGS station , the system integrates 26 3He proportional counters within a polyethylene moderator. These counters form three concentric rings at 65, 110, and 175 mm from the beam axis, with a gamma - beam tunnel in the moderator and the target centered.
The cylindrical sensitive volumes of 3He counters are 500 mm long, pressurized at 2 atm with 3He. The inner - ring counters are 1 - inch in diameter, while the middle and outer rings have 2 - inch diameters. Made of thin stainless steel, these counters feature low background, high γ resistance, and good pressure tolerance.
The polyethylene moderator measures 450×450×550 mm along the beam. To reduce environmental neutron interference, 2 - mm Cd sheets cover all its surfaces, and then it is sealed with additional polyethylene plates.
