Findings in the present study. Colonic inflammation and resultant intestinal barrier disruption induced hepatic ERK pathway activation, thereby promoting adaptive β-cell proliferation through the inter-organ neuronal relay system from the liver to the pancreas. The liver senses the state of obesity through colonic inflammation, and colonic inflammation serves as the first trigger of β-cell proliferation during obesity development.
