 Muscle atrophy is a primary characteristic of both sarcopenia and cachexia, significantly impacting physical function and quality of life. This figure illustrates the multifaceted causes of muscle atrophy, including aging, chronic diseases, malnutrition, and reduced physical activity, and to better understand and address these causes, researchers have developed various experimental mouse models tailored to specific etiologies.
