The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded $11.6 million to the University of Louisville through a five-year Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (CoBRE) grant to increase research focused on nutrition and metabolic health. With this funding, UofL will launch the Nutrition and Metabolic Health Center (NMHC), where researchers will seek new understanding about how foods affect health, how the body processes food and how environmental exposures affect metabolism.

UC Berkeley scientists report the first analysis of the genomes of eight bats from the genus Myotis, known for having the longest-lived species — 50 years. The analysis finds a close link between bat longevity and its immune system — longer-lived bats had higher levels of cancer-fighting genes. The analysis suggests that an immune system able to mount an overwhelming attack against infectious organisms and cancer may be integral to a long lifespan.
