Two transportation researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Josh Pihl and Derek Splitter, have been named SAE International Fellows, an honor recognizing individuals of exceptional distinction for outstanding and sustained accomplishments in mobility or related engineering.
Pihl, director of ORNL’s Buildings and Transportation Science Division, was recognized for sustained technical contributions supporting industry’s development of advanced, cost-effective emissions control technologies. His contributions include leadership of an industry-government consortium, development of model-based controls and standardized laboratory protocols, and research on emissions from alternative fuels.
Splitter, a senior researcher in ORNL’s Fuel Science and Engine Technologies Research Group, was recognized for transforming the community’s understanding of stochastic pre-ignition and abnormal combustion, pioneering work in reactivity-controlled compression ignition, and service to SAE through committee leadership, conference organization, journal editorship and peer review.
UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit https://energy.gov/science.
