Red alert for wrinkles: Tomato extract slashes age spots in landmark clinical trial

Journal of Dermatologic Science and Cosmetic Technology

Skin aging and pigmentation are complex processes driven by factors such as oxidative stress, melanin production, environmental exposure, and UV radiation. Antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors have gained attention for improving skin health by reducing pigmentation, enhancing hydration, and strengthening the skin barrier.

Golden tomatoes, rich in lycopene and carotenoids, have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and UV-protective properties. Similarly, niacinamide is known for its skin-brightening, anti-aging, and barrier-repair functions. Yeast extract provides glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that supports skin defense and inhibits melanin synthesis, while astaxanthin contributes additional antioxidant and protective benefits. This study evaluated the synergistic effects of these bioactive compounds in a novel oral formulation—the WONDERLAB® Tomato Niacinamide Beverage. A total of 62 healthy female participants were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-controlled trial. Participants were divided into treatment and placebo groups, with the intervention lasting eight weeks.

Comprehensive skin assessments revealed that the treatment group experienced significant improvements in hydration and barrier function, with a 35.63% increase in stratum corneum moisture and 29.39% reduction in TEWL. Visual and instrumental measurements showed enhanced skin gloss (18.59%), color uniformity (15.03%), and a lighter, brighter skin tone indicated by a 6.36% rise in ITA value. In addition to visible skin improvements, the formulation significantly boosted systemic antioxidant capacity. Blood analysis showed increased levels of SOD and GPx, alongside decreased MDA, highlighting reduced oxidative stress—a key contributor to aging and pigmentation.

In conclusion, this multi-component formulation offers both external and internal benefits, effectively improving skin appearance while enhancing the body's antioxidant defense system. The results provide strong clinical evidence supporting the use of this combined extract for anti-aging, skin whitening, and overall skin health improvement.
