Reactive astrocytes in SNpc produce excessive GABA via MAO-B in animal models of PD. Aberrant tonic inhibition of dopaminergic neurons causes reduced dopamine production in neurons and motor deficits. The Parkinsonian motor deficits and reduced dopamine production can be recovered by MAO-B inhibition or optogenetic activation of SNpc neurons.
