This is an image of US service members transporting an injured Marine to a Black Hawk helicopter for medical evacuation in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in 2012. Explosions are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries in veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. A new study of traumatic brain injury in military personnel shows no difference in outcomes for those injured in a blast versus those injured from other causes, according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
