The role of gut microbiome on host physiology: The pyrroloquinoline quinine-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (PQQ-ADH) activity of a commensal bacterium, Acetobacter pomorum, modulates insulin signaling in Drosophila to regulate host homeostatic programs controlling developmental rate, body size, energy metabolism, and intestinal stem cell activity (fly in the right). Mutant bacteria lacking PQQ-ADH displayed severe deregulation of developmental and metabolic homeostasis in the host (fly on the left). Shin of Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea, and colleagues, was titled, “Drosophila Microbiome Modulates Host Developmental and Metabolic Homeostasis via Insulin Signaling.”
