Photograph of 3-day-old Arabidopsis thaliana sporophyte (left) and a 30-days-old Physcomitrella patens gametophyte (right) are shown side by side. A similar mechanism controls the development of the root hairs of A. thaliana and the rhizoids (brown filaments) of P. patens. This image relates to article that appeared in the June 8, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Benoit Menand and colleagues of John Innes Center in Norwich, UK, was titled "An Ancient Mechanism Controls the Development of Cells with a Rooting Function in Land Plants."
