Anion vacancy engineering in CuIn(S₁₋ₓSeₓ)₂ QD-sensitized photoanodes. Schematic of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for solar hydrogen production. A TiO₂ photoanode sensitized with CuIn(S₀.₅Se₀.₅)₂ quantum dots—engineered to minimize anion vacancies—is paired with a Pt counter electrode. Under illumination, photogenerated electrons travel to the cathode for hydrogen evolution, while holes are consumed by the electrolyte. The optimized QDs deliver a record photocurrent of 15.1 mA cm⁻² for heavy-metal-free systems.
