Schematic representation of silicate weathering on the continental shelf of the South Yellow Sea during glacial periods. (IMAGE)
Caption
(a) During glacial periods, sea level fell, and the loosely exposed sediments on the shelf underwent significantly enhanced silicate weathering. (b) During interglacial periods, sea level rose and the river mouth retreated landward; fine-grained materials were rapidly transported into the sea, reducing the time and space available for sediment reweathering.
