Serena (Banu) Gmusoglu, PhD, and her colleagues at University of Iowa Health Care used banked maternal blood samples to show that low levels of placental growth factor (PlGF) in the third trimester are associated with a higher risk of ADHD diagnosis in children. The findings, published in JAMA Psychiatry, suggest a role for the placenta-brain axis in neurodevelopment.
