Principle of reducing liquid hydrogen boil-off using a metal–organic framework (MOF). (IMAGE)
Caption
In a conventional liquid hydrogen tank, heat ingress causes hydrogen to evaporate rapidly, resulting in a decrease in the stored amount. When an MOF is incorporated into the tank, hydrogen can be adsorbed at high density on the porous surfaces, thereby delaying evaporation. In a model assuming a transport-scale tank, the storage duration under mid-vacuum conditions increased from 64 days for neat liquid hydrogen to 221 days with IRMOF-20. These values were obtained from modeling based on the measured adsorption properties.
