Components of embodied intelligence in insect‑scale robots. Embodied intelligence in insect‑scale robots emerges from the integration of four interconnected pillars: power supply, physical intelligence, computational intelligence, and robot swarms. Physical intelligence uses smart materials, adaptive structures, and bio‑inspired morphologies to offload computation onto the robot’s body; computational intelligence encompasses lightweight AI (e.g., TinyML) and bio‑inspired algorithms that enable perception and decision‑making under extreme power and size constraints; power supply includes onboard batteries, energy harvesters, and wireless transmission; and robot swarms leverage collective, decentralized behaviors for distributed sensing and cooperative tasks. Together, these components form the foundation for achieving autonomy and real‑world applicability in millimeter‑ to centimeter‑scale robotic systems.
