A Janus catalyst with split personalities for seawater electrolysis. (IMAGE)

Schematic of the Cu-HITP@Co-HHTP Janus heterostructure. The positively charged Cu-HITP core (yellow) attracts chloride ions (Cl⁻, green) to drive the chlorine evolution reaction (CER) at the anode, while the negatively charged Co-HHTP shell (blue) repels chloride ions to protect the active sites for the two‑electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e⁻ ORR) at the cathode. This anisotropic surface‑charge design enables simultaneous and efficient production of H₂O₂ and active chlorine from seawater. Color code: Cu (orange), Co (blue), N (light blue), O (red), C (gray), H (white), Cl (green).
