With support from the Bezos Earth Fund, scientists in Salk’s ROOTS project are creating crops with deeper, stronger, and more carbon-rich roots that contain more suberin, a natural cork-like compound that decomposes slowly. Together with beneficial soil microbes, these traits can help lock carbon in soils, making them healthier, and strengthen the resilience of food systems to drought and disease, benefiting farmers, ecosystems, and communities around the world.
