Three types of signals interact in the visual cortex (IMAGE)
Caption
The model shows how three types of signals interact in the visual cortex. (A) In the chaotic version, activity changes irregularly and is difficult to predict. (B) After one of the model settings is changed, the chaos disappears and the activity settles into a steady, repeating rhythm. (C) Depending on the starting conditions, the model can develop one of eight different activity patterns. (D) Excitatory (E), inhibitory (I) and modulatory (M) signals constantly change without forming a regular, repeating pattern.
