A working model of PGK1-mediated restriction of viral replication (IMAGE)
Caption
The host molecular chaperone HSP90AA1 helps fold and stabilize viral proteins. PGK1 directly phosphorylates HSP90AA1, reducing its chaperone activity and promoting its K27-linked ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. The resulting loss of HSP90AA1 destabilizes viral proteins and restricts viral replication. The influenza A virus nucleoprotein may counter this defense by competing with HSP90AA1 for binding to PGK1.
