Mathematical framework for quantifying degradation heterogeneity: from Poisson raindrops to the Γ parameter (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic illustrating the fundamental logic behind deriving the set of equations for the spatiotemporal evolution of random degradation. Inspired by the classic Poisson raindrop question in mathematics, random nucleation of corrosion pits is analogized to raindrops, and the growth fronts of pits to “ripples”. The derivation yields the quantitative relationships among corrosion coverage (θ), average corrosion depth (dcorro), and time (t). The non-uniformity parameter Γ is then defined as the average corrosion depth at 50% coverage, providing a convergent and robust measure of corrosion heterogeneity that overcomes the inherent flaws of conventional pitting factors.
