How do baby plants survive salty soil? (IMAGE)
Caption
These plant embryos show where genes that help with salt stress are turned on. The blue color marks gene expression. One gene is active in the embryonic leaves—the cotyledons (left), while two others are expressed in the embryonic root—the radicle (center and right). Together, these genes help the plant control salt levels and retain enough potassium so it can germinate and grow in salty soil.
