Study design and intervention overview of the plyo-hiit trial. This figure summarizes the rationale, design, and key outcome measures of the three-arm randomized controlled trial. The study enrolls 210 children aged 9–12 years from Hong Kong primary schools, who are allocated to a 16-week plyometric-based high-intensity interval training (Plyo-HIIT) group, a structured fitness (SF) program, or a health education (HE) control group. The primary outcome is muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with secondary outcomes including body composition, muscular fitness, cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, body mass index, physical activity, and hair cortisol. Recruitment took place from September 2024 to March 2025, and the trial is ongoing with 6month followup data collection scheduled through August 2026. No outcome data are reported at this protocol stage.
