System-level overview of optical convolution accelerators

Two representative pathways are illustrated: (top) definition-based direct multiply-accumulate realized by integrated photonic weight banks and coherent summation; (bottom) theorem-based transform-domain convolution implemented via optical Fourier transforms and spectral/field-domain filtering. Both pathways share a common signal chain comprising encoding, linear weighting, and photodetection readout, motivating hybrid opto-electronic architectures.
