Mechanism for synergistic hardness-toughness enhancement in high-entropy carbide ceramics (IMAGE)
Caption
The schematic illustrates the synergistic hardening and toughening mechanism of the (Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Mo)C high-entropy carbide ceramic. Initially a single-phase solid solution, the material undergoes a controlled high-temperature aging treatment, which simultaneously activates spinodal decomposition and precipitation. This produces a complex microstructure containing interconnected spinodal decomposition domains and dispersed precipitates. The resulting multi-scale interfaces and defect structures effectively impede dislocation motion and deflect crack propagation. This entire process leads to a synergistic enhancement of both hardness and fracture toughness, overcoming the conventional trade-off in ceramic materials
