Matrix-dependent interfacial shear strength and fracture mechanisms in Si3N4 fiber-reinforced composites. (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic illustration of the correlation between matrix composition, interfacial shear strength, and the resulting fracture modes in Si3N4 fiber-reinforced composites. Left: The Si3N4f/SiO2 composite exhibits low interfacial shear strength,, allowing for effective interfacial debonding and extensive long single-fiber pull-out. Middle: The Si3N4f/BN composite demonstrates moderate interfacial bonding, primarily characterized by fiber bundle pull-out. Right: The Si3N4f/SiO2-BN composite possesses an excessively high interfacial shear strength,. This over-strong bonding tightly locks the fibers, completely suppressing fiber pull-out and leading to catastrophic brittle fracture.
