Conceptual design of the multichannel whisker add-on for endoluminal screening. (IMAGE)
Caption
(A and B) Biological basis: rodents engage in active whisking, with tactile signals decoded by the central nervous system to infer surface texture, geometry, and spatial proximity, enabling navigation and object recognition in constrained environments. (C) Engineering implementation: a concentric array of flexible, instrumented whiskers is integrated at the distal tip, transducing deflections into spatially encoded electrical signals that reflect contact dynamics along the examination path. (D) Clinical integration: during gastrointestinal screening, these signals are processed through algorithmic pipelines to extract local mechanical properties of mucosal tissues, thereby supporting lesion identification and improving diagnostic accuracy.
