Two Eurasian Rossby wave trains behind China's April 2025 wind extremes (IMAGE)
Caption
Mean wave activity flux and geopotential height anomalies during 10-15 April 2025 at (A) 500 hPa and (B) 200 hPa. Vectors show the propagation of anomalous Rossby wave activity, and shading shows geopotential height anomalies. The analysis identifies a high-latitude wave train linked to the Barents-Kara seas and a second pathway extending eastward from the Mediterranean near 40°N. The two pathways converged over Central Asia and helped establish the pressure pattern that drove extreme northerly winds over northern China.
