Beyond weight loss: personalized exercise improves body, metabolism and brain health in type 2 diabetes (IMAGE)
Caption
In a randomized controlled trial, a 16-week personalized exercise intervention tailored to individual aerobic fitness and muscle strength produced broad health benefits in adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants showed reduced abdominal adiposity, increased skeletal muscle mass, improved metabolic health and physical fitness, enhanced cognitive performance, and favorable changes in brain network activity. Improvements in skeletal muscle may contribute to these broader metabolic and cognitive benefits, supporting personalized exercise as a multidimensional strategy for diabetes management beyond glycemic control alone.
