Mechanisms of circRNAs in cancer (IMAGE)
Caption
CircRNA functions are dictated by their interactors, which are depicted and separated into the target effector macromolecule: RNA, DNA, and protein as described in previous research. In the nucleus, they participate in the regulation of transcription and DNA mutations/breaks, and modulate alternative splicing of precursor messenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs); in the cytoplasm, they function through multiple mechanisms, including acting as miRNA sponges to sequester miRNAs and modulate target mRNA stability and translation, loading or blocking proteins to regulate RNA function, serving as RBP sponges, scaffolds for protein-protein interactions, or protein decoys to modulate protein activity, and acting as translation templates driven by IRES or m⁶A modifications to encode peptides.
