A new book by Illinois linguistics professor Ryan Shosted and computer language designer Neal Davis tells the history of the Deseret alphabet, created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 19th century and described as “a marvelous, ambitious, quixotic project” to reshape the English language. Above, left, Davis and Shosted hold a copy of the Book of Mormon written in the Deseret alphabet at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
