Bioelectricity-powered wastewater resource recovery. An integrated electrically assisted forward osmosis (eFO)–microbial desalination cell (MDC) system uses bioelectricity generated by microbial oxidation to power ion migration in the eFO module. This closed-loop design promotes struvite formation for nutrient recovery while improving water flux and desalination efficiency, achieving 184% higher nutrient recovery, 57% higher water flux, and 45% greater desalination efficiency compared with standalone operation.
