Reconstruction and key fossil features of the Osaka mosasaur specimen (IMAGE)
Caption
Life reconstruction of the mosasaur specimen discovered in Osaka Prefecture, Japan (top), and fossil images of the basisphenoid bone (bottom). The basisphenoid exhibits a unique combination of anatomical features, including short laterally projecting processes and the absence of a ventral median groove, distinguishing the specimen from previously described mosasaurs and suggesting it may represent a previously unknown species. The study also reports the first confirmed identification of a mosasaur premaxilla from Japan. Life reconstruction by Satoshi Kawasaki. Fossil photographs courtesy of the research team.
