Trace lanthanum activates microbial phosphorus capture. (IMAGE)
Caption
Trace lanthanum activates microbial phosphorus capture. This schematic illustrates how low-dose lanthanum activation enhances biological phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. Lanthanum-containing aerogel beads slowly release lanthanum ions (La³⁺), stimulating potassium ion (K⁺) channels in polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), promoting phosphorus uptake, strengthening extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)-mediated capture, and boosting metabolic energy cycling through polyphosphate-associated transport pathways.
