A cabled observatory used a variety of highly sensitive instruments to determine the mixing of ocean water off the coast of Japan over time and its correlation with plankton and aggregate abundance and plankton diversity. The study found that plankton diversity was not correlated with ocean turbulence over the long term (measurements greater than one day) and instead correlated with daily vertical migration of plankton at night.
