One of the aims of Timo Betz’ research is to understand cancer cell migration by using structured, synthetic 3D environments that resemble the tissue found in the body. This image shows fibroblasts which were cultured with cancer cells to study the invasion of these cells in such a biopolymer based tissue. The cancer cells’ nuclei are marked red, with some actin filaments marked green. Cells start to divide uncontrollably after several days as is seen in cancer metastasis.
