An image of the model axons covered in oligodendrocytes, specialised cells of the brain that produce myelin. The model axons and oligodendrocytes are too small to be photographed by normal cameras, so the image was taken with a scanning electron microscope, which scans the surfaces with a focused beam of electrons.
