Co-first authors Daisuke Noto (right) and Bertil Trottet work with a custom-built sloped channel used to study how raindrops roll and aggregate sand after impact. The laboratory setup, developed with guidance from Penn geophysicist Douglas Jerolmack, enabled systematic observation of the peanut- and donut-shaped “sandballs” described in the study.
