Bacteria Motility (VIDEO)
Caption
In the classic “run-and-tumble” movement pattern, bacteria swim forward (“run”) in one direction and then stop to rotate and reorient themselves in a new direction (“tumble”). During experiments where bacteria were constrained by an array of pillars, UChicago researchers saw a different movement pattern they called “swim-and-stall,” but the bacteria used the same basic run-and-tumble movements.
