Ran Tao, a Ph.D. student in the Mathijssen Lab at Penn Arts & Sciences, used nanofabircation tools at Penn’s Singh Center to create nanoscale tubes and microstructured environments that mimic the tight, fluid-filled geometries bacteria encounter inside the body. These transparent microstructures allow researchers to directly observe how individual bacteria move, orient, and swim against flowing liquid, revealing how subtle changes in geometry and confinement can dramatically alter bacterial invasion and colonization.
