Nicole Coufal, MD/PhD, (center), associate professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine, received her first NIH R01 grant as principal investigator to study the mechanisms controlling human microglia gene expression after completing UC San Diego Health Sciences Grant Writing Course. Since then, she's served as a mentor for MD/PhD students Celina Nguyen (left) and Genevieve Curtin (right), who have now each received their own NIH F30 grants to investigate the role of microglia in autism and Down syndrome, respectively.
