Photograph of the nest of the social mite Stigmaeopsis longus after manipulation of its defecation site (IMAGE)
Caption
Although the defecation site is typically near the entrance at the edge of the nest, the mites were prompted to defecate at the centre of the nest using an ether extract of the host plant leaves. The white woven area represents the nest, and the black area within it indicates faecal piles. Two females are located near the faecal piles.
