Reaction scheme for electrochemical nitrate ion reduction (eNO3-RR). Using water as both an electron and proton source, and nitrate ions in industrial and agricultural wastewater as a nitrogen source, ammonia―a fundamental chemical―can be synthesized under mild conditions at ambient temperature and pressure using electricity derived from renewable energy.
