Two species competing for the same limited resource should not be able to coexist. Interested in cities as “model systems for the understanding of broader patterns of environmental change,” Kobe University entomologist SAGA Tetsuya (pictured with a nest of the Japanese yellow hornet in Nakatsugawa City, Japan) found that urban hornets manage to coexist by specializing on different targets.
