Illustration of nanolight pseudo-birefringence. Two-step excitation via a light-illuminated antenna and a sharp boundary efficiently excites higher-order light-matter waves (hyperbolic phonon polaritons) in a thin crystal layer on gold. Upon passing a precisely angled gold edge, the antenna-excited fundamental mode separates into different polariton orders propagating in distinct directions, creating a strong pseudo-birefringence effect that opens a new pathway for on-chip optical signal routing.
