The dense bands of neurons pictured are the two blades of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in the brain. Most nuclei are stained teal, but the dentate cells that have nuclei stained pink were activated when the mouse entered a threatening environment. Overactivity in this region is linked to avoidance behaviors and heightened anxiety.
