Merging Galaxy Clusters (IMAGE)
Caption
The faint glow of individual stars stretching between two bright galaxies indicates that the galaxies are actively merging while the galaxy clusters that surround them merge as well. The image was assembled from a total of 28 hours of observations with the 570-megapixel Department of Energy-fabricated Dark Energy Camera, mounted on the U.S. National Science Foundation Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, a Program of NSF NOIRLab.
