In the journal New Phytologist, Kobe University plant biologist FUKAKI Hidehiro and his team publish that liverworts lacking a gene called RLF have severe deformations in various organs (three plants pictured right and bottom), demonstrating that RLF is involved in organ development in these basic land plants as well. “RLF plays an important role in organ development since at least the dawn of land plants,” says Fukaki.
