Cardiologists Say Benefits of Sport and Recreation Physical Activities Outweigh Risks, Even for Individuals with Heart Disease (IMAGE)

Left panel provides examples of sport or physical activities with respective incident risk of death from any cause during such sport or physical activity, represented in micromorts per unit of exposure. One micromort is a unit of risk defined as a one-in-a-million chance of death. For example, the risk of death from a lightning strike is 0.09 *micromorts per year.3 Right panel provides examples of incident risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) during exercise or sport for given cardiovascular diseases and associated estimated risk of sudden cardiac death with sport expressed in micromort units per year. Of note, “All-comers” or “Competitive sport age <45 yrs” refers to the risk of SCD in sport amongst the entire population (including those with prior known cardiac disease and those with cardiac disease not previously diagnosed). Additionally, “CAD” (coronary artery disease) refers to the risk of SCD from CAD in sport amongst the entire population (including those with prior known CAD and those with CAD not previously diagnosed). *One micromort = one-in-a-million chance of death.
