particle tracks streaming from a collision of two uranium nuclei (IMAGE)
Caption
An artistic representation of charged particle tracks streaming from a collision of two uranium nuclei overlaid on a sketch of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The incoming uranium nuclei, exaggerated in size, are shown contracted along the beam direction, illustrating the effects of traveling close to the speed of light. By analyzing particle flow patterns from many such collisions scientists can reconstruct the shape of the original colliding nuclei.
